Educational Visit Connects Classroom Science with Plant Research and Crop Conservation
Raipur: Grade 11 and 12 Science students of N.H. Goel World School visited the R.H. Richharia Research Laboratory at Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya (IGKV), Raipur, on 18 September. They were accompanied by Mrs. Santosh Sharma, Mr. Barun Jha, and Mrs. Sharmishtha Chakraborty.
The visit provided an opportunity to understand how concepts studied in the classroom are applied in plant biotechnology and agricultural research.
Dr. Sanjay Bhariya guided students through the Tissue Culture Laboratory, where they learned about micropropagation, a technique used to multiply plants under controlled conditions using suitable nutrient media.
Students explored its usefulness in propagating plants that are difficult to grow from seeds and producing large numbers of plants.
The learners were also introduced to doubled haploid plants and their importance in plant breeding. They learned how anther culture and chromosome doubling can help researchers develop genetically uniform breeding lines for crop improvement.
Students gained exposure to molecular biology techniques, including gel electrophoresis, DNA fingerprinting, and PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction). They learned how PCR amplifies specific DNA sequences and how these techniques support genetic research.
A highlight was an introduction to the university’s extensive rice germplasm collection, which helped students appreciate the importance of conserving crop diversity for agricultural research and future food security.
The visit offered valuable insight into modern scientific research and encouraged students to explore the connections between biotechnology, agriculture, and environmental conservation.
