Young Researcher Examines How Media Narratives Shape Insect Conservation
Raipur: N.H. Goel World School proudly celebrates the academic achievement of Gurbani Sabhlok, a Grade 12 Science student, whose research paper, “From Perception to Protection: The Influence of Media Narratives on Insect Conservation,” is now publicly available on ResearchGate.
Co-authored with Gokul Prabhu of Ahmedabad University, the review paper examines how media, literature, popular culture, and commonly held attitudes influence the way people perceive insects. It explores how these perceptions can determine which species receive public attention and conservation support.
The research highlights the effects of beauty and charisma bias. Visually appealing insects such as butterflies often attract admiration and conservation attention, while less popular species—including cockroaches, flies, beetles, and termites—may be overlooked despite performing important ecological roles.
The paper also examines how education, responsible media representation, science communication, and citizen science can improve public understanding and encourage more balanced approaches to insect conservation.
This accomplishment reflects Gurbani’s sustained effort, scientific curiosity, critical thinking, and commitment to environmental research. Her work demonstrates how young researchers can question familiar assumptions and contribute meaningfully to conversations about biodiversity and conservation.
