Grades 1 and 2 Learn About Nutrition Through an Interdisciplinary Project
Raipur: Students of Grades 1 and 2 at N.H. Goel World School, Raipur, became “Little Food Detectives” as part of an exciting interdisciplinary project on healthy and unhealthy food.
The project brought together learning from different subjects, including Science, Mathematics, Art, Sports and Languages. Its main aim was to help young children understand the importance of good nutrition and make healthier food choices.
During the project, students identified different food items and discussed why they were healthy or unhealthy. They enjoyed singing action songs about food and took part in a lively race to sort healthy and unhealthy items.
Language learning was also included in the activities. Students used suitable describing words for various food items. During an object-talk activity, they confidently spoke about different foods and shared their ideas with the class.
Grade 1 students also created their own fruit and vegetable market. They enjoyed playing the roles of buyers and sellers while learning how to bargain, calculate prices and exchange money. This activity helped them understand basic Mathematics through a real-life experience.
The project successfully connected the classroom with the kitchen and the marketplace. Through joyful and practical activities, students developed a better understanding of nutrition, communication, teamwork and responsible food choices.
The children are now more aware of what they eat and why healthy food is important for their growth.
When children learn to choose healthy food, they take their first step towards a healthier life—and that is real learning.
