Hands-On Activity Encourages Curiosity, Teamwork and Scientific Thinking
Raipur: Grade 2 Cambridge learners at N.H. Goel World School explored the topic of “Separating Mixtures” through an engaging hands-on activity as part of their Cambridge Primary Science learning.
Based on the Cambridge approach of active learning, enquiry and learning by doing, the activity encouraged students to investigate different mixtures, make predictions and test their ideas.
The learners explored three simple methods of separation:
- Hand sorting: Students identified and picked out larger objects from mixtures. This developed their observation skills and attention to detail.
- Sieving: They used a sieve to separate materials according to particle size and discovered how large and small particles can be sorted easily.
- Magnetic separation: Students used magnets to separate magnetic materials from non-magnetic ones. They also learned how magnets are used in recycling plants and scrap yards to separate metal from other waste.
Throughout the activity, students worked confidently in teams and discussed their observations. They learned that the properties of different materials help us choose the most suitable method of separation.

The experience strengthened their scientific understanding, critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. It also helped them connect classroom learning with practical situations from everyday life.

The activity reflected the Cambridge Primary aim of nurturing learners who are confident, responsible, reflective, innovative and engaged.
Filled with excitement, meaningful discussions and joyful discoveries, the session showed that children learn best when they are encouraged to explore, question and experiment.
When young learners use their hands to explore, their minds begin to discover the wonders of science.
